Summertime Fun! Six Activities to Enjoy with Your Dog
The long summer days are here, and there’s nothing better than spending your time outside whenever possible. Unfortunately, it seems that often means leaving our furry companion at home, especially when outdoor locations prohibit animals (except service dogs). For most pet owners, finding the occasional pet-friendly location allows the outdoor fun to continue without leaving our best friends behind.
As the temperatures continue to climb, there’s no better way to keep cool than at the beach. Whether it’s exploring the water’s edge, running across the sand, playing in the waves, or having a quick nap on the beach blanket—your dog is sure to have a blast. Ensure to bring plenty of clean drinking water, snacks, and a cozy blanket to enjoy whatever the day has in store.
To help get you started, here are six summer activities to do with your dog:
Here are Our Top Three Dog-Friendly Beaches in Vancouver, BC
Spanish Banks Beach, Vancouver, BC
Located along Northwest Marine Drive, this beach is divided into three sections: west, east, and extension. The extension is home to a beautiful off-leash area, perfect for exploring with your pup. With a seaside seawall system, you’ll be able to spend your day relaxing, playing, and soaking up the sun.
Buntzen Lake, Coquitlam, BC
This gem isn’t just enjoyable for your furry friends; you’ll love the incredible views too. This beach isn’t just for swimming. There are 10 km trails, leash-free areas, and beautiful scenic views to keep you and your dog engaged all day. If your dog plays a little too hard, there’s a dog washing station near the bathrooms.
Barnet Marine Park, Burnaby, BC
Whether you’d like to spend the day fishing, swimming, or simply exploring the area, the Barnet Marine Park has something to offer for everyone (and their furry companions). There is an off-leash dog area where your pup can cool off or play with other puppies. To make a day of it, bring a picnic lunch and enjoy.

Experience Pup-Friendly Micro Brews
Whether you’re looking for a quick drink with friends or a new experience altogether, you don’t have to leave your dog behind. Many micro brew patios in the Port Coquitlam region allow patio service for guests with pets. Two hidden gems include Northpaw Brewing and Tinhouse Brewing. Both locations enjoy both human and canine customers, meaning you’ll never have to leave your pup behind. Pet-friendly patios offer dog bowls of water, shade, and even a tie-up location (in the event you need to go inside).
Hit Up the Drive-In
The Twilight Drive-In is Vancouver’s hidden gem for anyone wanting to catch a flick with their dog. The drive-in allows well-behaved dogs on-site, making it a fantastic option for someone wanting a relaxing night while still enjoying the summer weather. Dogs are expected to be always kept on a leash and under the owner’s control. Pets are not allowed in the concession area or washrooms.
Get Into Water Play with Your Pup
Enjoying the summer weather doesn’t always mean travelling outside the home. Consider getting out the sprinkler and spending a few hours playing in the water with your dog. Most dogs enjoy splashing around in a kiddie pool (always make sure they’re hard plastic), especially if you put a few of their toys in the water. Should you have an in-ground pool, letting your dog swim around with you is another fun way to spend the afternoon. Always be sure to monitor your pup closely while it’s swimming.
Try Your Hand at Hiking
While there are many hiking trails within the Vancouver area, it’s always important to check whether the park is dog-friendly. You’ll be expected to keep your dog on leash throughout the trails, even if you seem to be alone. Your dog will love the new smells, sights, and experiences while spending quality time with you. Ensure to bring snacks, treats, water, and a solid pair of hiking shoes with you.
Here are Our Top 3 Dog-Friendly Trails:
Ridge Park Loop Trail
At 4.5 kilometres, this heavily trafficked loop trail is perfect for beginners or moderate hikers. It’s used for bird watching, hiking, and nature trips with beautiful scenery.
Cypress Lake Trail near Port Moody
This 8.2 kilometre trail is a back trail and lightly trafficked out. It’s predominately used for hiking, walking, and bird watching but features a stunning, picturesque lake.
Hoy Creek and Scott Creek Trail in Coquitlam
The 8.5 kilometre loop trail is perfect for all skill levels. It offers views of a river with easy-to-locate markings.
Take Your Pup Fishing with You
It doesn’t matter whether you’re fishing off the side of a bridge or if you’ve got the latest boat and tackle; bringing your dog along makes the day better. Try to find a cool shady spot, put out fresh water and a blanket (in case he wants to take a nap), and enjoy your time at the water. Always take care with sharp lures around your dog; the barbed end can make removal impossible without veterinary care. If you’re taking your dog on the boat with you, invest in a properly fitting life jacket for your pup. Although they’re not required, a life jacket can save your dog in case of an emergency.
