The Story of an Extra Special Dog-Human Team
Mookie and George (a retired RCMP officer) had an extra special bond. They had worked hard together to become a certified service dog team through Operation Freedom Paws Canada (OFPC).
OFPC is located on Vancouver Island, BC, and they pair veterans and individuals with disabilities with a rescue dog. OFPC teaches the handler to train their own dog and certify them as a service dog team. This special therapeutic canine-human relationship allows veterans and individuals with disabilities to live an enriched life and engage with their communities.
How the Journey Began
I was contacted by George's sister Ann about scheduling a photo session for Mookie. As we chatted, she shared the story of how she came to have Mookie and the reason why this session was so important to her. You see, Mookie had lost his human. George had passed away to cancer suddenly just a few weeks prior. Ann was now Mookie's new guardian.
To give a special tribute to both her late brother, his loyal canine companion and their incredible accomplishment, Ann wanted to have some unique photographs and artwork created to display in her home. We decided on an indoor session at my Port Coquitlam studio because I really felt it was important to showcase Mookie and his service vest without any distracting elements.
Mookie's Day at My Studio
My sessions are always at an easy pace and I like to let the dog settle in and get to know them a bit before taking the first shot. Mookie was a bit reserved but very lovable and sweet. He explored the studio and was happy to play but he wasn’t too sure about being on the “backdrop.” This is very common by the way, and my priority is always the dog's comfort and ease. Before ever taking a photograph I always make sure the dog is comfortable with my camera, flash and other equipment. We started with candid shots first and just let him do his thing. Mookie has the most adorable head tilt and also has a serious side. I wanted to capture it all. Mookie was doing great.
The real moment of emotional clarity came when it was time to take some photos of Mookie in his service vest. He hadn’t worn the vest since George had passed away and you could see a change in his behaviour as soon as he put it on - almost like he knew what his purpose was and that he was working to honour his beloved handler. It was a surreal experience.
An Experience to Remember
The photo session was truly a meaningful experience for everyone involved and I'm so thankful to have had the opportunity to capture this special chapter of Mookie's life. The single photo on the right struck me so much. I wanted to illustrate just how powerful the human-dog bond is and wasn’t sure how I could achieve that without George, but Mookie showed me the way. Looking up with dedication, I felt with all my heart that George was with us that day.
I know the photos will be a treasured reminder of George and Mookie’s amazing story for years to come.
Although Mookie is no longer a working service dog, he does accompany Ann to work every day at a senior's residence and gets his fill of spreading joy and love to all.
