Keeping Your Pets Safe For Halloween
Halloween is an exciting time for family — especially the kids! However, Halloween can sometimes be a spooky experience for your pets. Here are some ways to keep your pets safe for Halloween and enjoy some terrifically fun times together instead.
Pet-Safe Costumes
Many pet stores and pet-friendly companies hold Halloween parties for four-legged guests, and coming in costume is encouraged. If you decide to dress up your dog or cat this year, look for a safe costume. Materials that are stretchy and not constricting can help keep it easy for your pet to breathe and move around. Velcro straps are also useful for putting on and taking off the costume more easily without needing to pull something over your pet’s head. Look for a costume with loops or spots to place your pet’s collar or harness if you’re walking them.
Avoid Toxic Candy
Halloween candy is a tasty treat for human companions, but can be toxic and even deadly to pets. Make sure to keep all candies out of reach of your dog or cat’s nose by placing it on a high shelf or cupboard. Sugar-free candies containing xylitol or chocolate candies made with a large amount of cocoa can both be deadly and cause organ dysfunction. If you’re not sure if something eaten on accident is safe, you can check out the Pet Poison Helpline’s list of toxic items, or call them anywhere from the US or Canada.
Provide a Safe Place
In addition to scary skeletons and giggling ghouls, there are many frights on Halloween that may scare your pet. New people arriving at the house for candy or a party, loud noises of firecrackers, and strange smells and sounds may all make your pet nervous. Provide a safe spot for your pet to rest and relax during the holiday festivities, such as a crate kept in a quiet room, or a scratching post perched up high. This will give your dog or cat a chance to relax and rest. If scary noises are bothering them, a TV or radio left on a soothing station can help drown out the noise. Pheromone diffusers such as Feliway and Adaptil are other great ways to calm your pet while guests are visiting.
Safety on the Street
It’s fun to take your pet with you while you’re out trick-or-treating, but there are some safety tips you should follow. Be sure to purchase or add reflective tape to your pet’s leash — this helps keep them (and you) visible after dark if you’re crossing a street near cars. Attaching lights or a flashlight can also help both of you see more easily when walking around. Keep any candy or prizes in a bag away from your pet so they can’t accidentally chew on anything. Lastly, bringing along a few treats for Fido can help make the experience more fun.
Halloween is a fun, frightful night of activity. By following the above tips, you can help keep your pet safe while enjoying the holiday. Be sure to have a safe spot for your pet to rest as needed, and your vet’s number on hand in case anyone samples the candy!
