Do You Have a Green Thumb?
If you are ready to start your garden, here are five dog-friendly veggies you and your pup can enjoy!
The best part of gardening is eating the fruits (or vegetables) of your labour. If you're a pet owner, it's not much fun if your dog can't enjoy what you grow in your garden, too. I've compiled this list of 5 vegetables humans and dogs can enjoy together.
Please remember it’s always best to check with your veterinarian before adding any new foods to your pet’s diet.
A few of our favourite veggies around here are:
Carrots
I love carrots raw or cooked, and they’re a great healthy option as an add-in or treat for dogs too. Make sure to cut them into bite-size chunks before feeding to prevent choking, especially in small dogs. You can also grate them and use them in dog cookie recipes.
Celery
Celery is a go-to staple in our house. Often referred to as "rabbit food," celery is a great snack for dogs too! It works great as a kong stuffer and is an obvious choice paired with xylitol-free peanut butter.
Cucumbers
Like you, your dog needs plenty of water to stay hydrated and healthy. Cucumbers are 96% water, so they’re an excellent choice for your furry friend! Dogs love the crunch of fresh cucumbers, and they are perfect in frozen dog treats.
Green Beans
Plain green beans are full of essential vitamins and minerals and make a yummy snack for your dog. Most dogs love green beans, and if they get access to your garden, they may even eat them right off the vine.
Zucchini
We all know zucchini is a super versatile veggie. It’s no different when it comes to feeding it to your dog. Zucchini doesn’t smell very interesting, so as a stand-alone veggie snack, it may be a bit of a hard sell, but there are many ways to spruce it up. Use it in cookie recipes, or make zucchini chews or chips in the dehydrator.
Before you decide which vegetables to plant in your garden, make sure Fido gives them the ol' taste test. Also, consult your veterinarian for specific recommendations for your dog and remember, dogs should consume even nutritious foods in moderation.
